Just a quick update to let our customers and others know that members of ConnectSolutions will be attending next week’s event in San Francisco. If you are attending and want to meet up, please drop a line so we can coordinate!
As discussed earlier on this blog, we have updated the original MeetingPulse application (based on the AIR betas), so you can try it out now by visiting this link. This release includes all of the same features of the original version, with a few enhancements as well. We suggest putting it in your “Startup Folder” on Windows, or setting it to launch on startup on the Mac. If someone is able to get it working on a Linux desktop as well, please let us know in the comments!
Monitoring posts have been submitted from people running ConnectMonitor since we launched the tool. As we discussed in this previous post, the results are posted to a back-end on Google App Engine, and so far, it seems to be working quite nicely. This has proven to be a fun experiment so far, so if you’d like to try it, you can access the AIR application here.
ConnectMonitor does exactly what it implies: It monitors your Acrobat Connect Pro deployment, and if there’s a problem, alerts you to the issue. This is in its early days of development, so please don’t count on it as your only monitoring source (shame on you if you don’t have multiple methods in place…). We would really appreciate your feedback and suggestions, so please fire away to michael at this domain dot com.
What Is It?
ConnectMonitor is a desktop application (uses Adobe AIR) that monitors your Acrobat Connect Pro deployment to ensure its availability. If there is a problem, its status will change, and an alert will be played to notify you if you have it running in the background.
How does it work?
ConnectMonitor is a desktop application (Windows or Mac, maybe even Linux now…someone please confirm ;), which you run (consider adding it to your programs to launch on startup) when connected to the internet. ConnectMonitor then polls an entry-point into the Acrobat Connect Pro system to determine status (as recommended in the administration best-practices) every 20 seconds. Based on the results, the status indicators are updated to reflect the availability of the system. ConnectMonitor also posts these results to an application we’ve built on Google App Engine ( http://code.google.com/appengine/ ). Our intent is to eventually provide sms and email alerts, as well as graphical charts on this data. More on that to come…
How much does it cost? $0.00 right now. There may be pay-for services in the future, or not.
How do I get support?
This is an experiment/beta, so there isn’t any traditional support. If you have an issue, or have feedback, please do send it along to michael at this domain dot com.
If you were one of the several hundred folks who downloaded and used the MeetingPulse application with Acrobat Connect Pro, then you know it hasn’t worked since the AIR Beta 2 expired. Unfortunately, as “trailblazers” on the AIR Beta and pre-release programs, we got bitten by some pretty significant changes to the platform between Beta and final release. However, enough frustrated-email has arrived about MeetingPulse no longer working that we are revisiting the code and porting it to the current AIR release.
We expect to have a preview release available for our customers, as well as a few folks on either on-premise and Adobe-Hosted in the next week or so. If you are an existing customer, I’ll be following up directly. If you fall into one of the latter two categories of Acrobat Connect Pro customers, please send an email to michael at this domain, and I’ll add you to the list.
Ok, I admit it. I was one of the consumer-electronic fanatics who braved the lines to be one of the million people who picked up the new iPhone 3G this weekend. I could try to justify my participation in this frenzy with lines about “researching the platform for use with Acrobat Connect Pro” and such, but the reality is, I just wanted it, and wanted it now (then).
Lot’s of people are complaining about the lack of copy/paste, battery life, etc… For me, the most painfully lacking feature is Adobe Flash support, which severely hinders my ability to use the iPhone with Connect (and justify the hours in line). However, I did come up with one solution over the weekend, which is a minor port of our Global Monitor tool to an iPhone-customized interface.
ConnectSolutions’ Global Monitor system is a real-time dashboard that provides essential information into the health of each of our customer’s deployments, including real-time meeting reports, usage trending, alerts, and other metrics designed to provide transparency into our service. The screenshot you see above is a proof-of-concept with an extremely simplified user interface showing whether the service is up or down, or in maintenance mode. I have saved this web app to my home screen using the bookmarklet feature of the iPhone for easy access.
While I won’t be holding any meetings on this device until Flash support is added, there’s some exciting opportunities around this platform for system monitoring and reports, so stay tuned for more on this topic…
Here’s a little app we’re providing to the Acrobat Connect Pro community to enjoy. Once uploaded to your Connect service, you can use this application to launch your personal meeting rooms with an alternative (i.e. pretty) user experience that is fool-proof (well, someone will prove us wrong
Download the ZIP and install it on your Connect service, and enjoy. Releases notes in the ZIP walk you through how to use it (very easy). It will work on ConnectSolutions’ platform, and on-premise deployments. A version will be available for Adobe-Hosted customers shortly as well. ENJOY, and let us know how you like it in the comments!
